Ten annoyances I'm heartily sick and tired of

-- Cell phone ring tones.

-- The whole "men are from Mars, women are from Venus" thing.

-- Tattoos. YUCK!

-- Piercings. YUCK! YUCK! YUCK!

-- Negativity about women who dress "too revealingly". Bare midriffs, "commando", etc. are totally harmless and help spice up the world.

-- Portland traffic. The "planner class" that runs this city never stops tearing up the streets to accommodate new mass-transit projects, but refusal to do anything to accommodate cars seems to be their official religion.

-- Weird new versions of Christmas carols where the timing of the singing is "off" and doesn't mesh with the music the way it's supposed to.

-- Kids with no respect for adults they don't know, and parents who won't rein them in.

-- Conservatives who hate liberals in general, tar all liberals with the brush of the extreme left, and accuse liberals of being intolerant.

-- Liberals who hate conservatives in general, tar all conservatives with the brush of the extreme right, and accuse conservatives of being intolerant.

How about cell phones owned by people in the next cubicle at the office, who leave them on their desks where they ring and ring with the same idiotic, tinny version of some obscure tune that you've already been driven nuts by 100 times before?

A well-shaped ankle is already perfect. It cannot be improved by putting a ring of dark-green crud around it. Just my opinion.

Even aside from the crowds, I can hardly bear to linger in most stores these days because of those ghastly versions of Christmas carols playing on their PA systems. As intolerable as a spiritual being in a crowded elevator.

A happy weekend to you too -- any snow out there in Minnesota?

PS: Anyone confused by the "spiritual" reference above, check out this thread on Chell's site (scroll up a bit first to see the original posting):

On the cell phone issue, I and a cubicle neighbor have often indulged in certain fantasies involving sledgehammers. Oh, how I've rhapsodized about stalking through the office with my trusty sledgehammer, alert for the first tinny chirp signalling the presence of one of these annoyances waiting to be smashed. My sledgehammer would have a row of cell phones painted along its handle, much as allied pilots in World War II used to paint tiny swastikas or red circles on the sides of their planes, each one symbolizing one "kill".

It rained today, but it usually rains here except in the summer. We usually get snow only one or two days a year, at which point the entire city grinds to a halt because no one's prepared for it. Lots of cold wind, though. Luckily my apartment's heating system is in perfect working order.

You're originally from Montana, aren't you? So you must have had your fill of extreme weather.

I would indeed post pictures in that event -- pictures taken with a CAMERA, not a cell phone (I don't have one -- I like my brain DNA just the way it is, thank you very much). I know what you mean about "doesn't matter where". Countless times on the bus coming home from work I've heard various celltards use their 'phones to notify some remote unseen party that "I'm on the bus." How on Earth did pre-modern mankind survive all those millennia without any means of conveying such vital information in real time?

I grew up in northern California (where there's really no "weather" at all) and moved to Oregon about ten years ago. The weather here isn't really bad compared with most places. It's just that the dominance of that "planner class" always leaves us uniquely unprepared.
