Another nice collection of links, thanks for posting. I'd heartily agree with you on the "Russian nazis". Truly bizarre, but I think it is understandable in that if you're an intelligent Russian, you've left the country. The most well known example being the massive immigration of Russian Jews to Israel; but Australia, Britain, Canada and the U.S. have all benefited by getting the cream of the crop - the folks that want to do better, and who don't want to live in a third world police state, etc. The D.C. area has a good sized Russian community and I've had the pleasure of working with several of them in the tech industry around here - they're VERY smart, and very good at what they do, (often better than some of the native born Americans...). There's no way they'd benefit living in Russia like they do here. The people who are left would seem to buy into the various dust-bin authoritarian ideologies, and so they stay where such is the norm. Good - stay there, and away from me.

I'm sure there's some truth in that, but some things are just bizarre no matter how dumb people are -- Russians giving the Nazi salute is like black people dressing up in KKK outfits. I'm actually just as surprised that anybody could do this in the middle of Moscow without getting the crap beaten out of them.

I've also heard that Russia now has a huge illegal-alien problem, so as far as attracting people goes, they must be doing something right.

Mendip and Infidel753 -- Current TV's VANGUARD recently devoted an episode to neo-Nazis in Russia. If you get the chance to watch it, do so, as it's very eye-opening.

I used to work with a Russian woman who left Russia because of its ugly conditions. She found a much better life in the U.S., fortunately. I do wonder how many Russians want to get out of the country but can't because of financial constraints.

Infidel,
Thanks for reminding me about the Zambian space program. My parents taught in Zambia in the early '70s and it was on the telly. And yes, my Dad told me they rolled folks down hills in oil drums. Utterly mad stuff! Anyway, Zambian TV at the time was amateurish beyond belief. the didn't have a satellite link so TV from the UK had to be flown out on video or film. This took some time so my Dad had to avoid hearing the result of the FA Cup for nearly a week on the BBC World Service. Eventually it turned up and him and his mates got the beers in and sat down to watch England's top football match.

Except the daft sods had two films and showed the second half first!

Also once some hideous bug got on the front of the lens for the TV news and my mother almost died of shock. You can imagine what it looked like!

My parents lived near the Congo border and that is a rum country. There was an outbreak of cross-border cannibalism and the "Times of Zambia" reported it with the headline, "Gobblers strike again!" A friend of my Dad's had travelled to the Congo and swore blind he'd seen butchered Belgian nuns on sale in the market.

It was fun though but what is truly sad is that a huge number of the kids they taught are dead from AIDS.
