The link to Christian writings about women is as bad as any link to modern-day Islam and its repression of women. One thing's for sure, man-made religions' commonality is to subjugate females. The more fundamental the religion, the more repressed the women, which then gives the patriarchs the god-given right to abuse them. And that abuse is enforced by threats of shunning, abandonment, violence, and even death.

Religion: If you're a woman, run from it as fast and as far away from it as you can!

There's very little to choose from between Christianity and Islam. The only reason the Christian world is now less oppressive and violent than the Islamic world is that there are far fewer fanatical believers remaining here than there. But those quotes give a good sense of what women could expect if Christianity won its former dominant position in our society back.

As recently as 1998, the Southern Baptists adopted this as their "essential statement of belief:"

"...a woman should ''submit herself graciously'' to her husband's leadership and that a husband should ''provide for, protect and lead his family."

I'm surprised they didn't adopt another "essential statement" suggesting that a good spanking now and then should keep the little lady under control.

They just can't help sounding like some clueless, scruffy-bearded Islamic theologian or Old Testament patriarch. And they wonder why the younger generation is abandoning their churches in droves.

.....that a good spanking now and then should keep the little lady under control

They probably wouldn't be averse to that too, except that nowadays spanking an adult is more associated with kink than discipline, and they don't want to have anything to do with that. But using psychological pressure and bullying, pretty much anything goes.

Well, damn! When I wrote my comment I was totally unaware of this:

The 'Christian' movement that tells husbands to SPANK their wives 'to correct misbehavior'

A growing number of married American couples are agreeing to allow husbands to keep their wives 'in line' by taking to corporal punishment.

The trend is called Christian Domestic Discipline and much of what is known about the practice is published on the website Learning Domestic Discipline, published by husband and wife CDD duo, Clint and Chelsea.

The website states: 'It is an arrangement between two adults who share the belief that the husband is the head of the household and with that position comes the right to enforce his authority.'

Any adult who "agrees" to spanking and the like for purposes of "discipline" either has disastrous self-esteem issues or is into that kind of thing because it turns them on.

It's sad that some people need to give themselves bullshit religious excuses to indulge their kinky side, and even sadder are those who genuinely think so little of their own right to self-determination that they believe they deserve what, in that case, is actually domestic abuse. That's a perennial problem, of course.

That pope link was classic. Frank I is just running what brung 'em as Darrell Royal used to say. Why change a good thing when it allows you to bugger little scamps and dress up like it's still 1499?

Indeed. His rhetoric may have fooled a few people, but the Catholic Church is not going to change fundamentally. They're still shielding the molesters as much as ever.
